Renewed interest in a port in the Messara Bay.
On Thursday in Kokkinos Pyrgos and Moires/Festos was a meeting of various politicians. Among other Manolis Kefaloyiannis (ND) and Maria Petrakogiorgi (Mayor municipality Phaistos), and Antonis Maniadakis (CEO of Minoan Lines).
Maniadakis said specifically:
“While we talk about growth deficit in Crete, the construction of the port of Timbaki is a very important investment, as it will make the south coast on the map of global hub route, passenger ferries and cruise ships.
The local community should take into account that Venice, Genoa, Marseille, Barcelona, London, Rotterdam and Copenhagen are the most beautiful cities in Europe with great tourism development, while the largest ports are absolutely in relation to the protection of the environment and cultural heritage.
It is a very positive development for the entire Messara – and especially Timbaki – which will create hundreds of new jobs for our residents, while such a perspective opens up new business opportunities, ways for tourism and coastal shipping, the strengthening of trade with North African countries , export of products of local agriculture, livestock and other products will result. ”

The local people must take action by themselves. And I can say with certainty, with blind action “Rest of Europe” do not help. Also petitions for example are a fine thing, but ….for me in this case only to calm the conscience…… Sorry. For sure you know, not only in germany the recipients many times give a shit for this….Everyone who has ever been on Crete knows how proud some of them, what is good initially, unfortunately, they are sometimes so self-defeating. (But, have a look to germany…)Since 2006 there is not only one citizens’ movement which pursues what kind of Ideas politicians have in their wet dreams. They also inform the residents with some information events about the dangers and the lie of the alleged hundreds of jobs. Please dont think that people on Crete are stupid and dont now whats going on. They can only make their decisions from which they know. In 2005 they just have seen that there are many new jobs, now have become a lot smarter. Not without reason, there are no larger hotels at the south coast, and there have been some efforts in this direction also on Komo.Nevertheless, maybe someday someone begin…….It has also been fished with dynamite…………
Incidentally however, by the statement of of Mr. Maniadakis one thing is clear.
He dont want to build only a port for container handling. There will even be created facilities for ferries and cruise ships.
Of course, he also says not a single word about the problems the mentioned cities have with their major ports.I really thought this topic would be off the table, but now I’m back on my HP to bring the current status and try to get as much information on as possible. What you must see clearly, that until now is less happened than in the beginning. We can move from here only to help the people clarify the lie of hundreds of new jobs, or unlike what will happens with nature and the villages around and what they will loose in tourism sector. But also clear for me, we can not stand beside and only look at it.

No more rape of Cretan land and sea.
